Great White Sharks usually hunt early in the morning when visibility is poor for the prey species. They prey upon fish (like Tuna, Rays etc), other smaller species of Sharks, dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea lions, sea turtles, sea otters and even sea birds. They prefer prey that has a high content of energy rich fat.
Great whites eat a wide variety of things from fish and octopus/squid to sea turtles and whale meat . But, their favorite food is seals and/or sea lions. Human flesh actually tastes BAD to them. If they see something that looks like prey (people paddling out on surf boards can look like a seal or a sea turtle to a hungry shark), the only other way to find out more about it is tasting. Great white sharks are known to usually take a "taste bite" before chowing down. That is why it's usually one-bite-and-go for a great white with humans. Take this in note: in the United States, millions of people a year are killed by lighning strikes, but in a whole year only 0-2 people die of shark attack. Sharks have reason to be scared of us more than we do them. Of about maybe 30 people killed by sharks all over the world in a year, people kill millions of sharks for food, sport, and just plain-out fear.
