In multiplayer, the first player to hit the flag must do so when the last 2 digits on the timer are the same, e.g. 555 points. (As long as it isn't 0.)
In single player, Toad will give you a mushroom house when you save him from the ? block (if he didn't die) depending on what the last digit of the timer is.
In both cases, instead of the usual 'Course Clear' fanfare you will hear the one from Super Mario Bros. and fireworks will appear.
