The solar eclipse of August 1, 2008 is a total eclipse, but the path of totality does not cross India; it will only be a partial eclipse there. Because India is a very large country, the time the eclipse begins varies considerably according to the location. Generally speaking, it will begin earlier in the north (for example, at 10:33 UTC (16:03 local time) in New Delhi) and later in the south (11:12 UTC (16:42 local time) in Bangalore). At the height of the eclipse, the moon will block almost two thirds of the sun in New Delhi, but less than one third in Bangalore. For details and for information for more cities, see NASA's eclipse page at http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEmono/TSE2008/TSE2008.html ; in particular, look at the link for "Table 15 - Local Circumstances for Asia".
