GMT means Greenwich Mean Time, which is the equivalent of UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The GMT time zone is based on when it is exactly mid-day over Greenwich, London, UK, i.e. when the sun is at its highest point in the sky there, which would be approximately half-way between sunrise and sunset.
As the earth spins, the sun moves over other countries and they experience mid-day at a later time. If a country is in the time zone GMT -5 (minus five), then when it is mid-day GMT in London, such a country would be five hours behind GMT, i.e. seven a.m. (in the morning) in the GMT -5 zone.
Cuba is GMT -5, for example.
Of course, before the sun was over Greenwich, it had travelled accross Asia and Europe.
It was mid-day there before it was mid-day in London. In those areas East of Greenwich (specifically the 'Greenwich meridian' line of zero longitude) their time zones are GMT + (plus) so many hours. If a country is in the time zone GMT +5 (plus five), then when it is mid-day GMT in London, the time in that other country is five hours ahead of GMT, i.e. it is five o'clock in the late afternoon in that GMT +5 zone.
e.g. Calcutta is GMT +5

More on the subject...
The question as asked is a little confusing inasmuch as London time and GMT are sometimes different. During Daylight Savings Time (DST), for instance, London is one hour off GMT. So, during DST, Pacific time (PDT) is only 7 hours behind GMT, but would still be 8 hours behind "London time" because Great Britain goes on Daylight Savings Time.
GMT is a kind of central world time. If your timezone is GMT -5, that means that your clock is behind 5 hours, compared to this world time. USA Eastern Standard Time is GMT -5, when they don't use daylight saving time. (When using daylight saving time, their time is GMT -4).
Nowadays, the abbreviation UTC is normally used instead of GMT. For most practical purposes, they mean the same thing.
09:00 (9am)
1630. Eastern time is -5 GMT
GMT is the timezone in London, England. All other time zones are described relative to GMT. For example, New York is GMT - 5 hours. Los Angeles is GMT - 8 hours. Standard time is how we set our clocks when we are NOT observing Daylight Saving Time. Daylight Saving Time reduces the time-difference between your timezone and GMT by 1 hour. For example, When NYC observes DST, the timezone in NYC becomes GMT-4 (instead of the normal GMT-5)
it will be 5:00 am in GMT of the next day
5 AM EST = GMT 10 AM (or 1000 hours) 5 PM EST = GMT 10 PM (or 2200 hours)
The time for EST is GMT-5 so that would make 23.33GMT 18.33EST
You have to do a conversion to your local time. If you live in the GMT + 5 (Eastern standard time) and wish to find out when an even in GMT + 1 is at you would add four hours. It is the difference between the time zones. If you want to find out what time an event is at that is GMT - 4 you would add 9 hours, because 5 - -4 is 5+4 = 9. That is the general rule, your GMT - Other TimeZone. GMT + 5 - GMT - 4 = 5 - -4 GMT + 5 - GMT + 1 = 5 - 1 Then the result is added to the time.
