Most people consider Neanderthals and "cavemen" as synonymous, although of course this is not really true. Modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens) have also lived in caves, as did more primitive hominids if suitable caves were available.

According to Christopher Stringer and Clive Gamble (In Search of the Neanderthals), Neanderthals began to appear around 230,000 years ago, and became extinct around 30,000 years ago.

When modern man (Homo sapiens) first arrived in places like Europe, having come from Africa, caves were the obvious places to live. They are dry and stay at a constant temperature and can be defended from wild animals or even other tribes.

Skulls over 1 million years AOL have been found in caves in Spain an Portugal, as well as the bones of butchered animals and drawings on the cave walls.
