The first reference to behaviour that could be described as piracy is by the ancient Egyptians referring to the 'Sea Peoples'.
These ferocious maritime raiders attacked both shipping and coastal settlements during a period known as the 'New Kingdom' which stretched from 1600 to 1100BC. They appear to have been active throughout the Mediterranean during this period.
The first recorded Viking raids were in the 7th Century AD so the Sea Peoples predate the Vikings by at least 2000 years.
