Pianist and composer Franz Liszt was born in Hungary in 1811. Said to have begun composing at age eight, his first known composition is a work for piano entitled Variation on a Waltz by Diabelli, S.147, which was composed in 1822 and published in late 1823 or early 1824 as Variation No. 24 of Part II of Vaterländischer Künstlerverein, a collection of variations by 50 composers.
