The TSA have strict rules:

1 carry-on bag that fits the overhead compartment

1 private bag, like a handbag, backpack, or a computer bag

Don't carry things that are seemingly dangerous, like firearms, or even toy guns.

TSA might confiscate it.

The TSA once confiscated something important from me (I didn't know it was there!), so watch what u carry!

You can take liquids (shampoo, conditioner, hair gels, tooth paste, etc.) that are 2 oz or less. They have to be in a clear one quart plastic baggy and taken out of your baggage for inspection at the security check point. As for clothes, you can only take enough to fit in a carry on. Drinks brought from the outside will not get through the checkpoint. Once you have passed security, you can buy a drink and carry that on the plane. Tools over 7 inches and sharp objects as well as anything that can be used as a weapon are not allowed. Laptops have to be taken out of the bag and put in a bin by itself when going through the scanner. You also have to remove your shoes, belts, and coats if you have them. If you have anything that isn't allowed, they will take it and throw it away. You don't get those things back.

Two carry on items, such as a laptop or purse and a bag up to a certain size, are allowed.

Avoid liquids or gels as due to the "threat" of terrorism they will be confiscated. Bring a laptop, portable DVD player, or MP3 player to keep you entertained. Perhaps bring a dry snack (airplane food is terrible) and/or a good novel to read (the noise on airplanes makes reading nonfiction very difficult).

It's easier to explain what can't be taken, and that is weapons, sharp objects that pose a threat (and some that don't), any liquids that exceed 100ml, fireworks, and if you're crossing international borders you can't bring meats or live plants.

It's more a question of what you can't carry... I travel a lot and I travel light. Carry-on includes a change of knickers for unexpected overnight delays, a small toiletries bag with a spare toothbrush, travel size toothpaste, stick deodorant, hairbrush, my fully charged Kindle, iPod and iPad (or netbook), a plastic bag (for discarded knickers when the United Airlines flight is cancelled), travel wallet with passport, travel docs, boarding passes and a pen.

You can't carry any guns, ammunition or 'dangerous goods'.

If you're a smoker you're allowed to carry Safety matches or a cigarette lighter but only in your pocket - don't put it in either your checked or carry-on luggage.

a person would normally carry mainly closes but are still limited to what you can carry as if you carry to much you may be charged extra money and if your going on holiday you only need cloths and important things in your flight bag as you will be/get food on holiday.
