Never stand under a tree for shelter! And if you are at home, switch off all appliances..

Turning off appilances won't do a thing. The lightning will power them anyways. Additionally, avoid water and metals, since they conduct electricity. And DON'T USE A WIRED PHONE! I doubt anyone has a completely tethered phone anymore, but they can still shock you if you are not careful.

What you are suppose to do is evacuate immediately or if you don't have that much money to leave the state is do not go by any doors or windows. You can go to the bathtub with a mattress over your head:)

Do not stay in open spaces, do not drive or walk, do not be near or operate electrical powered devices, look for shelter in well constructed and solid places.
