They are intended for use by the fire department - they have keys. All fire hose cabinets use the same key.

If you, a person who is not trained in fire fighting were to try to use a fire hose to put out a fire you would likely cause a huge amount of water damage and may not be able to put out the fire. The water comes out at very high pressure making the hoses difficult to control, esspecially alone and without experience.

If you need to put out a fire, a fire extinguisher is your best bet. You can get small ones for your home. Keep one in the kitchen.

To use a fire extinguisher:

1. Pull the pin. This is what stops the fire extinguisher from being used accidently.

2. Squeeze the trigger.

3. Aim at the base of the fire.

Fire extinguishers vary depending on the type of fire they are intended for extinguishing. The type intended for home use expel a fine yellowish white powder, it's bad for your lungs, (but far better than being engulfed in smoke), so it must be cleaned up once the fire is out if the fire damage was minimal enough.

If you don't have a fire extinguisher small kitchen fires can be controlled by putting a glass or metal lid over the flames, or by covering whatever is burning in a thick layer of baking soda. Both of these methods stop the fire from getting any more oxygen, which the fire needs to burn. Note: it's important that you do not try to smother a fire with other kitchen ingredients because many would provide more fuel to the fire, and can cause a flaming cloud of burning dust or explode. Please do not take this as a challenge, you can be badly injured. 2nd Note: Never put water on an electrical or grease fire. It's safe to assume that if there is a small fire in your kitchen, it is electrical or grease, never use water.

If you can't extinguish a small fire in about 30 seconds, get out, call your local emergency services. If you are in a building with fire alarms, pull it, then call emergency services to give them details about the location of the fire. Fire can be unpredictable, and smoke even more so.

How does a fire hose stop a fire?

A fire hose is used to stop a fire by its ability to transfer water. The hose will deliver water from a source through a nozzle and onto the flames. We typically find a hose connected to a pump, which provides water under pressure. The hose will deliver that pressurized water to the nozzle, and a firefighter can direct the stream as needed.
