This just happened to me this weekend. I can tell you what I did, and then give you a survey of online opinion.
I called AAA, and the responding tow guy checked the battery (OK), then said he thought I needed a new key. It was Saturday night, with no dealer open the next day, and my other set of keys (and the valet key) was with my husband, in our house, 120 miles away. Great. Husband, being a great guy, arrives first thing Sunday morning with all the keys. AFTER A COUPLE OF TRIES, only the valet key worked.
As soon as it works, I drive home non-stop, afraid to turn the darn thing off. But finally I did. And then tried my original key again, just to make sure it didn't work before planning a trip to the dealer for a new one. IT WORKED FINE.
So, I get online. From all of the posts I see, it sounds like old, slightly dirty keys gum up the works inside the ignition lock, and smacking the key top lightly as if to pound it straight into the steering column frequently works to get the key turning. My nearly never-used valet key was indeed my cleanest key, and maybe had the least resistance. Now I have to figure out the safest way to clean out my lock without screwing it up.

Hey. I just read you answer and from reading other responses online. you can clean your lock by spraying some WD40 or keyboard dusters.
