If your computer doesn't detect the USB I would recommend the following;
1. Install the USB Driver that is most likely needed, To do so just Google the USB brand.
2. Ensure that your plugging the USB into the correct slot.
3. Ensure that the USB Port is also connected within your computer,
(USB Port to your motherboard/Hard-drive)
4. If your operating system is either; Windows 98/2000 , Windows XP, Windows vista, They generally dont come with defualt USB installer scripts. Therefore follow my first recommendation.
If all else fails just google it, Google solves everything!

Yes, if you save everything to your hard drive it should work. Just make sure you have a USB Drive... If you dont, it wont work.

Try running a free LIVECD and see if it will work that way. If it doesn't try a network install or swapping CD/DVD drives or use and external USB CD/DVD.
if it is a usb keyboard then yes you plug it into the usb ports if it isn't usb it wont work.
