What was a DUI and its purpose?
DUI is a Distinguished Unit Insignia and was worn on the collar of the uniform and/or the overseas cap. The DUI was a small pin worn to identify the basic unit of the soldier. This was usually a unit within the organization of an Infantry Division or other division. Most DUI's were made of brass with an enamel coating. There were some made locally in Europe and some were simple painted pins. They usually were in the shape of a shield and had a motto under it.
