Some people allow them to live out their years in the flocks and some prefer to use them in soups or dumplings. The older the bird the tougher the meat, this is why soups are better than frying or baking the chicken.
Stew meat. ;) Old chickens don't actually have any special nomenclature. "Pullets" are young, immature female chickens and "hens" are mature, female chickens. However, most hens will continue laying until the year they die, just not nearly in the quantity that they did when they were 1 year old.
Yes, hens can lay eggs for 2-3 years.
it depends on several things. you must realte to the silkyness of the hens, as urself. by doing this. it allows you to gain to knowldege of the mixures it may be
There shouldn't be a problem as long as the number roosters is not to large. The average ratio is one rooster for every four to six hens. If there are any more roosters than this they can cause damage to the hens.
a year old that is when they are past there best and have laid the most eggs
On many family farms the hens that are too old to lay eggs are used for food. Hens can lay eggs for years but after the third year most slow down so much that they are worth more to the family farm as food rather than continue feeding them. Hens at the large egg producing companies are sold off as meat birds just after they reach 2 years old. Here at Jadeacres we allow our hens to retire in comfort. We eat chicken, but not our own. Many of our original hens are still with us, even those who have not produced an egg for years.
Most egg producers will cull the flock when they reach about 18 months old.
Old chickens are called hens or stewing hens. These are chickens that no longer produce eggs. Their muscles are tough and need to be stewed a long time to become a delicious treat. They make good chicken soup.
the hens should accept the cockrel within one week at the most
Most hens begin laying eggs at about 16 to 20 weeks old. This depends on the breed and nutritional health of the hen. The hens first egg (s) are often small and can even be yolkless.
There is no reason except the chefs preference not to roast hens in any commercial kitchen. Most kitchens never know if the roaster they are cooking is a male or female chicken. Roasting birds are slaughtered and processed at about 6 to 10 weeks old depending on weight and can be male or female. Where ever you heard this from was probably due to a supplier substituting aged out laying hens for roasters. Old laying hens are often sold off as meat and are called stewing hens. Trying to roast the older hens does not work, they are too tough and the meat fiber does not break down well roasted. They must be boiled.
Hens are called PULLETS prior to reaching a year old.
