It depends on your needs. For me, a Subaru does the trick quite nicely and it is a very popular car up here. Most of them have 4 wheel drive and get good gas mileage. Try finding a used one from the '90's or so. Don't get freaked out about high mileage. These cars, when properly maintained will keep on going.
