I would suggest nothing until your dog is examined by a veterinarian - diarrhea can be caused by anything from parvovirus infection to intestinal worms to an obstruction with a foreign object to cancer. Without knowing what is causing the diarrhea, anything you give could make the situation worse.

However, in an adult dog that is otherwise healthy, you can probably just keep an eye on him for a day or so and see if the diarrhea resolves on its own - dogs are notorious for getting into things and eating random foods that may disagree with them, but they usually get over the diarrhea from this within 24 hours or so.

You should take your dog to the veterinarian immediately if your dog shows ANY of the following signs: vomiting, decreased energy, no appetite, not drinking, straining to defecate, any sign of pain, abdominal swelling, protrusion of the rectal tissues (this would be pink to red tissue bulging under the tail) or in any way seems to be "not doing OK". These are all signs of one or more serious conditions that may need emergency treatment or surgery.

If your dog has diarrhea, you can feed it with cooked bland diets. Bland diet may include 1/3 meat and 2/3 rice or other bland grain.

You may also add 1-3 tablespoons per meal of Yogurt or 2-4 tablespoons of boiled sweet potato in your dog's diet.

Remember not to add any oils or fats to the food AND you should cut the food into half until the diarrhea stops.

It all depends on the reason for the diarrhea, and there can be many. Anywhere from parasites, to having eaten something bad, to stress, to something much worse like parvo virus. I would definately have the puppy checked by a vet, before giving any kind of medication. If it did turn out to be a case of a simple upset tummy, the vet can prescribe metronidazole. If you cant take the pup to a vet, you can try pepto bismal 2-3 times a day but only for a day or two. No longer! then if it didnt clear it up, or other symptoms developed, then get him to a vet. I would not know how much to tell you to give anyway, without not knowing the weight of the pup.

Try pasta in small portions (as too much can cause vomiting) try small amounts such as handful for larger dogs every hour. Try to mix in small amounts of low protein dry dog food.

Avoid wet dog food or anything rich such as cat foods or fish. Please also make sure your dog has ample amounts of clean & fresh water as diarrhea causes dehydration.

Don't try to give him/her an imodium either.

Sometimes pumpkin can help if it isn't too serious, but a trip to the vet if it persists of has blood in the diarrhea is the way to go.

If you have a dog with puppies and she is ill, then she needs to go to the vet immediately. She must continue to feed her litter until about the pups are about 4 weeks old. Many dogs will feed beyond that age, too.
