You can be required to admit to a past conviction, especially if it is relevant to the job you are applying for. It is fairly easy, and routine, for employers to conduct a simple criminal history of an employee, and lying (about criminal convictions, education, etc.)will nearly always keep you from getting hired, or get you fired once they discover it. The best answer, if asked, is to admit it briefly, then explain calmly what you've done to move past that incident and how you've used it to better yourself. It may be hard to do, but it's the only thing that will work in the long run.
