Why the world needs tolerances

Intolerance breeds hate, and hate breeds violence, and violence breeds death.

some examples:

1. in the medieval ages, people did not understand that disease is caused by germs, so they blamed anyone who was odd, calling them a witch and burning them at the stake.

2. in Islamic countries, women are seen as sex objects and therefore have to cover themselves from head to food in order to not be desired. thus sexual desire is not tolerated, and results in maltreatment of women. in more primitive Islamic nations, such as Somalia, women are infibulated (stitched shut till marriage) and have their clitorises removed with a razor so that they do not seek sex.

3. in the medieval ages, investigating knowledge was regarded as sinful and evil; it was not tolerated. this is because st paul says that knowledge is the enemy of god. therefore scientific progress and the progress of humanity was held up by religious intolerance well into the 1700s. it is only because of the separation of church and state enshrined in the American Constitution that scientific progress, under the likes of bacon, could take off, without fear of religious reprisals. however, because the current bush administration is intolerant of scientific research, eg., into stem cells, again, religion is halting progress and therefore causing the death of living full people. there is of course the question of whether stem cells' harvesting from foetuses entails killing a person; the religious right argues that it does. however until a person has experienced and learnt and felt, ie., until they at least have a neurological system, they're not a person, just a growth.

4. Hitler could not tolerate the Jews so he massacred six million of them.

5. the dutch descendants who ruled South Africa till 1994 could not tolerate blacks so they put them into native reserves and allowed them to host casinos. really. it was called the apartheid or homeland system. same as American Indians.

6. the Americans could not tolerate the communists so they invaded Vietnam, killing thousands of vietnamese brutally with agent orange and napalm. very horrible ways to die.

7. the Americans could not tolerate Japanese supremacy in the pacific so they dropped atomic weapons on two Japanese cities. also a horrible way to die, especially if you are not directly in the blast, but have to stagger away with cancer and your skin burnt off.

8. al-qaeda could not tolerate Americans' lack of Islamic morality so they drove two aeroplanes into two magnificent buildings which represented the achievement of America and its greatness.

Tell them why you want to go to that college. Since you asked this question on Answers.com | WikiAnswers, it seems you are struggling with your answer. There is no way for the Answers.com contributors to know your reasons for picking a college, but here are some tips for coming to your personal answer.

First, ask yourself, do you want to go to this college? If the answer is no, consider not applying. On the other hand, we can't always get what we want, so if you are applying to this college for another reason such as parental pressure or financial constraints, go to the college in question's website, especially under Admissions. Somewhere, they will have information about their school telling you how great it is and all the benefits of attending. Consider these. Are there any that appeal to you? Writing a truthfully will make a better essay, but if for some reason you are unable to write with complete honesty, then at least write with partial honesty.

Be specific. Colleges want students who want to be there. Let them know you are interested, or at least that you took some time to get to know them. Don't copy-paste what they said on their website, but you can use it as a guide in your thinking. You can talk about a specific program or class that interests you, what an admissions officer said that impressed you, or something about the environment of the campus.

Avoid vagueness and generalities. Your answer should be tailored to fit that school. If you could apply what you are saying to other schools, find something to say that rings true about that unique college. Don't repeat yourself--you only have 250 words! Clichés and predictable language will make you writing sound recycled and lifeless. You want to stand out in their minds in a positive way. Sometimes when people write to try to impress someone, they tend to throw in any long or obscure word they can think of, but it sounds like just that: thrown in. If you know the word and it's the best one to convey your meaning, use it. If you are using it to show off, just go with something natural. Colleges want to see who you are, not that you can use a thesaurus. Finally, stick to the question. It's only a handful of sentences. Don't let your focus wander.
