The Union Army of the Potomac, under Major Gen. McClellan attempted to invest Richmond, but Lee's Confederate Army, by means of the systematic use of trenches and field fortifications was able to constantly outmaneuver the enemy forces.

In a succession of bitter encounters, McClellan was constantly paralyzed in the front and hit in the flank and rear, despite his army's notable superiority in numbers and means.

The negative outcome of the battle forced McClellan to give up his Peninsular Campaign carrying on his retreat towards Harrison's Landing.
