a gradient when used in photoshop is a layer that when selected has the option of having a start colour that moves through shades of that colour to another. I.e. starts white and as it moves down the page for instance wll go darker and darker until it black.

In photoshop, images can apear layered ie. Foreground, Mid-ground, and Background.
