hunting tools
The Apalachees were farming Indians who lived in northwest Florida from 1000 A.D, in the area of today's Leon and Jefferson counties. It is believed there were 50,000-60,000 Apalachees. Their work, as well as their social, ritual and political lives was organized by their leaders. The Apalachees were well respected by other Indian tribes, as they were considered a more advanced Indian civilization. They were prosperous and considered wealthy by the other Indians, and were fierce warriors. In battle, their bodies were painted with red ochre and they wore feathers in their hair. They ate food they grew, such as corn, beans and squash. The men of the settlements prepared the fields for planting and the women tended the crops. They also ate bear, deer and small game the men brought home and nuts and berries gathered by the women. The Apalachee men wore loincloths made of deer skin and the women wore Spanish moss skirts. In 1704, after attacks on Spanish Florida by the British, the Apalachees began migrating, mostly to Southern Alabama and Louisiana. Today, 250 to 300 of their descendants still live in Louisiana.
