What computer technicians need are as follows.

1. A collection of software. That would include operating systems, drivers, utilities, repair tools, memory testers, video testers, spyware removers, antivirus software, cleaner software, registry tools, etc.

2. Basic hand tools. Screwdrivers are needed to open the case and change components. Sometimes special screwdrivers are needed like security screwdrivers and torx drivers. A magnetic Phillips screwdriver comes in handy for motherboard screws. Forceps and tweezers are handy.

3. Basic electronics supplies. A soldering iron and 60-40 rosin core solder is good. Sometimes you might want to repair a power supply unit, such as if the fan is defective, unless it has an active warranty and shipping it off is a better option. Ground straps and antistatic mats are good to have. Chip pullers are only necessary for older PCs.

There are also optional tools and equipment that would help, but are not necessary.

1. Molex tools and parts. These are for repairing power supply plugs. There may be smaller varieties for the front panel connectors.

2. Hardware-based memory testers. These are boxes that are just for testing memory. You might be able to use them with a PC, but most will work alone. You would have to have all the correct adapters/jigs for each type of memory you plan to use which is compatible with the tester.
