The April tornado record in the US for a whole year is 267 tornadoes, which was set in April 2011. This month had an extremely active tornado season, particularly across the Southeastern United States.
By far the worst tornado to hit the U.S. in 2011 was the Joplin, Missouri tornado of May 22. This tornado was rated EF5, the highest level of tornado intensity. 30% of the city of Joplin was destroyed. In total the tornado killed 158 people (in addition to several indirect deaths), injured over 1,100 , caused $2.8 billion in damage, and destroyed nearly 7,000 homes. This makes it the costliest and 7th deadliest tornado in U.S. history.
Both Oklahoma and Missouri suffered very destructive tornadoes in 2011. Missouri was hit the hardest because of the Joplin tornado but that state is not entirely in Tornado Alley. Overall, the worst tornado damage in 2011 was in Alabama, but that state is several hundred miles from Tornado Alley.
