There were 1692 confirmed tornadoes in 2011. Obviously we can't list them all here, and it would even be too much to list all major tornadoes. So this list will be limited to those causing 50 or more deaths*.

  • The Hackleburg-Phil Campbell-Tanner tornado of April 27. This 1.25 mile wide EF5 tornado devastated several towns along a 132 mile long damage path though Alabama and into Tennessee. It was on the ground for over two and a half hours. The tornado killed 72 people and injured nearly 150, all in Alabama, making it the deadliest tornado in the state's history, as well as, at the time, the deadliest tornado in the U.S. since 1955 and the first to kill more than 50 since 1971. With damage totaling $1.25 billion it was the second costliest in the state's history, and the 4th costliest in U.S. history. Like another tornado listed here, it was part of the 2011 Super Outbreak, the largest and most destructive tornado outbreak ever recorded.
  • The Tuscaloosa-Birmingham tornado of April 27. This 1.5 mile wide EF4 tornado devastated Tuscaloosa, Alabama and the suburbs on the north side of Birmingham on a damage path 80 miles long. The tornado killed 64 people and injured more the 1500, making it the second deadliest tornado in Alabama history. Damage cost $2.2 billion, making it the costliest tornado in Alabama history and the second costliest in U.S. history, though at the time it occurred, it took first place. It was also part of the 2011 Super Outbreak.
  • The Joplin tornado of May 22. This 0.9 mile wide EF5 tornado destroyed a large portion of the city of Joplin, Missouri after gaining strength at an almost unheard of rate. The tornado carved a damage path 22 miles long and was on the ground for nearly 40 minutes. In all, the tornado killed 158 people and injured over 1100, making it the 7th deadliest tornado in U.S. history, the deadliest since 147, and the first to kill more than 100 since 1953. Damage amounted to $2.8 billion, marking it as the costliest tornado in U.S. history. The tornado caused most of its damage in the 15 minute period that it was over Joplin.
