There were five tornadoes in Missouri on May 13, 2009. The first, rated EF1 ocurred near Milan, but did not actually hit the town. A second EF1 tornado hit the town of Novringer. The third and most significant tornado of the event was an EF2 that hit Kirksville, killing 2 people. Two other tornadoes, both rated EF0, passed near Edina.
The Tri State tornado first started north of the town of Ellington, Missouri.
The deadliest tornado in U.S. history struck many towns in three states along a damage path 219 miles long. In Missouri the tornado devastated the town Annapolis. It then continued into Illinois where the towns of Gorham, Musphysboro, De Soto, Hurst-Bush, Frankfort, and Parrish. Finally the tornado crossed into Indiana where it devastated the towns of Griffin, Owensville, and Princeton. The town worst hit by this tornado was Musphysboro, Illinois, where 234 of the tornado's 695 deaths occurred.
The Greensburg, Kansas tornado of May 4, 2007 was definitely a real event. It was the first tornado to be rated EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. This enormous tornado destroyed 95% of the town of Greensburg, killing 11.
That would probably be the city of Joplin, Missouri. On May 22, 2011 the city was struck by an EF5 tornado that caused about $2.8 billion in property damage, making it the most destructive tornado in U.S. history. With a death toll of 159 it was also one of the deadliest. Although there was some damage from this tornado outside of Joplin, it was minor by comparison.
Tornadoes have occurred in most areas of Missouri. No town is safe.
