The Dutch ruled the settlement New Amsterdam on Manhattan island for only 50 years, too short to really leave a real Dutch heritage. They did however leave a few even now famous names of places, litteral translations of the original Dutch names: Wall Street, Broadway, Brooklyn (named after the Dutch town of Breukelen), and Flushing (named after Dutch city Vlissingen). And when they handed over Manhattan to the English, the Duch included 24 'articles of liberties' in the transfer agreement that among other things assured freedom of religion for the Manhattan/New York citizens.
Manhattan was owned by the Dutch in 1639.
