Depends on which make of vehicle, and any custom applications applied to your trans. Old Ford, always type F. Old Chevy, dextron. However, setting up an old power glide for racing, I had a tranny guy explain to me that with the mods done to the trans, full manual valve body, larger clutch pack, 8inch converter, ect., and, since the system was completely empty, and fresh, that I should go with type f because it has an anti slip ingredient, that would help my trans perform better for what I was doing with it. He also told me that the "trick" trans fluids were simply put nothing more than type f. Dextron, differs, I'm told, in that it has a compound designed to help keep gaskets, and seals soft, and working as designed. That was about 20 years ago, and I have followed his advice ever since, and not had any problems. Chuck.

Transmission fluid is a very important fluid while maintaining a car. Transmission fluid can be low, and a car can drive a decent length without any problems. However, the distance is dependent on the shape and condition of the rest of the car.
