The use of paddle wheel boats allowed Americans to ship goods down the Mississippi and store them in New Orleans. When the steam operated paddle wheel boats were no longer used, barges filled with products came into use and are still used today.

Because Pioneers needed the Mississippi River to ship their crops to markets and the Spanish allowed the Americans to sail on the lower Mississippi and trade in New Orleans and without New Orleans, Louisiana could not make a secret agreement with Spain because France wanted to gain control of Florida so they offered New Orleans as much as $10 million for New Orleans and West Florida in order to gain control of the territory. The Pinckney treaty of 1795 established the 31st parallel as the Southern border of the United States with the Spanish Empire (Mexico). It also gave the United States navigation rights to the Mississippi River. The agreement allowed western settlers the "right to deposit" their exports in New Orleans and to engage in commercial transactions within that city.
