If you're looking for a shade tree you cant go wrong with an oak. The Pin Oak (Quercus palustris), Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa), and the White Oak (Quercus alba) are just a few examples.
Or if you would like evergreens which make very good wind breaks. The Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra), Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus), and the Red Pine (Pinus resinosa) are a few that would work well.
Cherry trees can grown in sandy soil as long as their drainage is good. Trees will not do as well if the water remains after a few hours of no rain.

Beans grow better in soil because soil has all the moisture and nutrients. If you use sand, it could be to rocky. Clay will also not be good even though it can keep good moisture it does not have the nutrients like soil.

There are several Hawaiian plants that do well in sandy soil. Some of these include beach plants like coconut palms, yellow and strawberry guava, ironwood trees, and autograph trees.
Because the pore space (the space between soil particles) in sandy soil is so much larger. In sandy soils, the water is drawn by gravity downward and away from the roots quite easily, but in clay soils, the pore space is so much smaller that capillary action holds the water much more tightly. This is the same reason that clay soils flood more easily and take longer to dry out.
