During the cold war the American isolationism really extended from the Soviet Union to Latin America. This trend has since changed.
Merchants traded throughout the Early Middle Ages, as we can see from archaeology. In the 5th and 6th centuries, trade was very much reduced by the upheavals in society brought about by peoples invading Western Europe. Once this subsided, however, trade gradually increased. In fact, the Vikings, who we remember as raiders, were also traders, and are remembered primarily for this in some parts of Europe. By the end of the Early Middle Ages, there was much more trade, though it was not as great an economic force as it soon became.

The Early Middle Ages were defined by the transition from Roman Empire to new forms of States and Nations within Europe; and culturally, by the conversion to Christianity of northern and eastern Europe. Also, by the so-called Karolingian Renaissance, the re-descovery of ancient classical scriptures and the concerted action of monasteries in copying and safekeeping these scriptures. The High Middle Ages were defined by high economic growth, by the first clear trend towards urbanization, by the development of nationalism and by the development of academic studies and the establishment of many Universities, several of them still existing to this day.

Trends in tourism differ depending upon the country the tourist lives in. For example, American tourists are not as likely to visit places in the Middle East than say, 25 years ago. This trend is based on safety concerns of American tourists. The trend for Americans is to yes, take vacations, but take them within the USA or "safe" places such as Canada or Western Europe. While destinations are one trend, the method of transportation is another trend. Generally speaking, based on the Air Malaysia disaster, many "western tourists" have tended to travel on "western based" airlines like Air France or British Airways.

A trend in society is a something that many people do or have. For example if a new clothing brand is "trending" then it's popular among many people. In maths, particularly statistics and other data analysis, a trend is a pattern which is observed in the data you have. For example I could measure the time it takes me to cycle 10 miles over 6 weeks. The more I cycle, the better I get, and the less time it would take. I would expect to see a TREND in the times, since they'd go down.
