A bad enough collision or hitting a bad pot hole etc. As far as I know the inertia switch is just a little metal ball that sits on a magnet , and if the Explorer gets " jarred " bad enough the metal ball jumps off the magnet and trips the switch , opening the electrical circuit and cutting off power to the fuel pump
