For the Union: the Army of Tennessee (US) of 42,000 men under Maj. Gen. Grant, reinforced in the evening of the 6th April by three division (about 20,000 men ) of the Army of Ohio, followed of another one in the morning of the 7th (about 6,000 men).
For the Confederacy: the Army of Mississippi of about 44,000 men under Gen. Albert Sydney Johnston.

There is atleast one other name for the battle commonly referred to as Shiloh. Because General Grant had gathered his troops at Pittsburh,Tennessee, the battle of Shiloh is also called the Battle of Pittsburg. There Grant is hit with a surprise attack from the forces of General Johnston.
The order of battle which from the Union side is usually accurate places two Union armies at the Battle of Shiloh. The Army of the Tennessee had 48,000 troops on the first day of the conflict. This was reinforced with 18,000 troops from the Army of the Ohio.Generally speaking, the Union then had an overwhelming advantage with 66,000 troops.
