Surface runoff and Subsurface runoff. Basically, above ground and below ground
Two major sources of oil pollution in the ocean are oil spills and oil runoff from land-based sources. Oil spills occur when oil is released into the ocean from accidents or leaks during transportation, drilling, or storage. Oil runoff refers to the pollution caused by oil and petroleum products that are washed off from land surfaces into rivers and eventually reach the ocean through runoff.
New construction allowed runoff from hillsides which flooded basements in nearby homes.Runoff naturally seeks a path of least resistance.Continual runoff can undermine hills, leading to mudslides and ground failures.
Groundwater and runoff are two different things. Groundwater refers to water underground in the aquifers. Runoff ends up back underground by seeping into the soil after a rain. Runoff may also find its way into ditches, retention ponds, lakes, etc.
