Any two colours will make another colour. The only paint colours or tints that you need in your palette to make any colour are: Red, blue, yellow, white and black.

The above answer is wrong and obsolete.

Your color printer uses only the white paper, plus three colors of ink: Magenta, yellow, and cyan. By varying the amount of each of the inks, it can make almost any color (fluorescent colors that glow under black light can not be made).

Most kinds of paints, inks, dyes, and other pigments can be mixed using these same three colors. White paint might be needed underneath these pigments if the surface being painted is not white.

Red, yellow, and blue were once thought to be the primary colors, but science has since proved this to be false. But there are many die-hards who cling to the old primaries, because they worship the "art masters" who used them. Unfortunately, too many of them are schoolteachers, so the wrong primaries are still taught in schools.
