They struggled because Jesus wasn't there anymore. When he was there they would always follow his commands and do what he said. They had trouble eating and drinking until eventually they found out that they should do things on there own. They learnt the true meaning of life.

Hope this helps.

Immediately after His crucifixion and burial, the disciples hid. Then on the 1st Pentecost fifty days afterwards, the Holy Spirit of God was released to all who would repent and be baptized to follow Christ and obey God's Law as He had (Acts 2:38-39). The newly formed Church of God begins to grow and spread throughout the Asia Minor area and the Roman Empire.

The Book of Acts is The Bible's major source of the events of the Apostles immediately after the 1st Pentecost when God's Holy Spirit fell upon the Apostles hiding in a home. It seems to only record the first twelve years (the biblical number of a 'new organized' beginning) in what is called the Syria-Palestinian region from 31 to 43 A.D. Then we find Peter leaving and Jesus' brother James becoming the Head of the Jerusalem Church of God around 44 A.D. Also, Herod in Acts 12 beheads the eldest of the sons of Zebedee, James, brother to the beloved Apostle John. As we do not hear of the remaining Apostles, it seems reasonable that they had already left the region on their mission.

Other Scripture tells of the travels of Peter, Paul, and other workers to convert those called to what was called 'The Way' and later Christianity. The new movement spread, eventually worldwide despite some horrendous events and persecutions.
