The two groups that were in the Roman society were the patricians and the plebeians. But please remember that this situation was only in the early days. As the city grew and the empire prospered other social classes developed based on wealth.

There were actually three social ranks in Roman society, which the Romans called orders. The highest one was the patricians who were the aristocracy and the owners of large landed estates. The plebeians, or plebs, originally were all commoners; that all non-partisans, both rich and poor. However, the rich plebeians became differentiated from the poor ones. They were given equite status (equestrians cavalrymen), which was the second highest social rank, a sort of lower tier of the aristocracy. This order started when rich plebeians were allowed to serve in the cavalry. As the Roman army grew, the need for higher military officers grew. Gain, rich plebeians were recruited. Eventfully, this became a honorary title for the rich non-patricians which based on meeting a certain threshold; that is, on being rich. The equites became an entrepreneurial group of bankers, money lenders, merchants and investors in shipping and mining. The term plebeian came to indicate lower rank people who did not belong to the elite: bureaucrats, artisans, shopkeepers, skilled or unskilled workers, and the underemployed or unemployed.
