China was ruled by warlords in the 19th century and early 20th century. Eventually, the Kuomintang, formed by Sun Yat Sen formed the Chinese Republic. The party was later taken over by General Chaing Kai Shek after Sun's death. The republic was short lived though.
During the 2nd World War, the Kuomintang and the neophite Communists joined forces to oust the Japanese conquerers. Once the war was over, these two leading factions vying for the Chinese soul fought it out in a civil war, with the Communists being the victor.

The conflict began in the late 1920s, paused during the Japanese invasion in World War II, and resumed after the war ended in 1945.
