Actually, the proper name is the Congress of Industrial Organizations, which was founded in the 1930's by John L. Lewis. It, and the American Federation of Labor, disputed whether organized labor should be divided by the traditional "craft" method, or by industry. The dispute was ultimately resolved by a merger of the organizations into what is now known as the AFL-CIO.

Each major political party in America is organized by function AND geographic region. Parties are organized geographically into national, state, and local organizations, and by function into officeholders, activists and paid workers, and voters (the party-in-the-electorate). American political parties are not formally based on social/economic class, anyone can join.
I'm not sure that he was important to the 13 colonies. The American Revolution was almost 200 years after Ralegh sponsored and organized his colonization attempts in North America. All three of his attempts were failures.
