Prior to the French Revolution he was the son of a Noble in Italy and played no important role in France. He joined the French Army in the very early stages of the Revolution and his fame began from there.

His first major effort in defense of the Revolution was on 5 October 1795 when he defended the Directory against a pro Royalist insurrection by turning his cannons on them and giving them a whiff of grapeshot. He killed 1,400 of them and cleared the streets of Paris of the rabble.
