In Greek Mythology Danaë was a daughter of King Acrisius of Argos and his wife Queen Eurydice. Acrisius was disappointed she was not a son and consulted with an Oracle who informed him that he would be killed by his daughters son .

Horrified by this phrophesy legend has it that Acrisius he imprisoned her in a bronze tower or cave so that she would remain childless. However Danaë was loved by Zeus who came to her in the form of golden rain falling into her lap (some versions say golden coins), and impregnated her. She gave birth to their son; a demi- god by the name of Perseus .

Acrisius was afraid to kill his daughter and her baby for fear of Zeus wrath so he cast Danaë and Perseus adrift in the ocean in a wooden chest during a terrible storm. The god Poseidon calmed the sea at the request of Zeus and they washed safely ashore on the island of Seriphos ruled by King Polydectes.

The King was obsessed with Danaë but she was not interested in him. Eventually he agreed not to marry her on the condition her son would bring him the head of the Medusa;a gorgon who could turn her victims to stone if they gazed into her eyes.

Once Perseus left on his impossible mission King Polydectes continued to harass her and even had her imprisoned and made his personal slave . Polydectes hoped that one look from Medusa would turn him to Perseus to stone and he could then force his mother into marriage.Perseus used the goddess Athena's shield as a mirror, the god Hermes winged sandals and the god Hades helmet of invisibility to avoid her lethal gaze and he decapitated her.

When he returned from his quest Perseus was angry that Polydectes had sent him to an almost certain death just so he could pursue his mother Danaë. In revenge Perseus took out Medusa's head from a sack and turned Polydectes to stone. There are numerous versions of this myth.

Later when entering the Olympic games Perseus accidentally struck Acrisius on the head with hisjavelin or discus fulfilling the prophecy that he would kill his grandfather

Some later legends also state Danaë had two sons, Argus and Argeus, whom she had by Phineus.
