Yes, there are many requirements and stipulations. Some are: you must be at least 17 years old. Taking certain medications or drugs and recent illnesses such as a cold or flu would prevent you from giving blood. You would also be excluded from donating blood if you had an elevated temperature or recent tattoo. There are more.

1) Go to a blood bank.

2) Once there, you'll undergo a series of free physical examination conducted by a doctor or a nurse. You'll also answer some questionnaires.

3) Once confirmed you're a qualified donor, you'll be taken in a room where there are reclining chairs in which you can rest your arm.

4) A needle is inserted on your arm and your blood will flow inside a blood bag.

5) After forty minutes or so, the entire procedure is done.

6) You'll be advised to rest or sleep for a while before leaving the blood bank.

There are a number of requirements that determine whether an individual can give blood or not. These requirements are often called 'blood donor eligibility guidelines'. Usually, the basic requirements are that you must be at least 16 years old and weight at least 120 pounds. In terms of disease or illness, there is usually a waiting period before one can be eligible to give blood. Most blood donor sites will have an extensive F.A.Q. section that answers any concerns someone might have about donating blood.

Is it possible for a patient with O- receive O plus blood type?

Yes, it is possible to give O Positive blood to O Negative patients, but it is not likely to happen. Blood Bankers are trained to "match" blood to the person receiving the blood and these two types, while compatible, are not a good "match". The presence of the Rh factor in O Positive blood is likely to cause an immune response when given to a patient that does not have the Rh factor as in Rh Negative blood. The opposite is acceptable. It is perfectly OK to give Rh Negative blood to and Rh Positive person since they will not be getting something they do not already posses.
