It uses a symmetrical 4wd design. In my opinion, it is very effective. For example, if your front wheels are on the ice, they power the back wheels and then the Subaru can keep moving. It works the reversed way as well. The only problem is, if all four wheels are on ice, then it doesn't work because even if it powers either front or back wheels, its still on ice, so it can't move.

Subaru uses what is called a boxer engine. the pistons move horizontally verses vertically,
Any of the 4WD Subaru GLs are primary front wheel drive with either mechanical or electromechanical actuation of the rear drive axle. So, in 2WD, only the front wheels drive the car.
Usually no, most 4wd have selectable 2wd/4wd transfer cases and some switch automaticly. Full time 4wd is marketed as (AWD) all wheel drive- audi Quattro and Subaru's are some examples.
The 4wd is automatic in the 1992 Subaru Legacy Wagons. There is an empty fuse under the hood that has a cover that says FWD that can be used to disable the 4wd and force it to be in front wheel drive, but by default, there should not be a fuse in it. When there is a fuse in the FWD connector, the dashboard will have a warning light that says FWD, indicating that you do not have 4wd enguaged. If the light is not lit and you do not have 4wd then you have a transmission issue that will likey need the expertise of a transmission specialist. Check the transmission error codes (as opposed the the standard engine error codes.) They will likely help you pinpoint the problem.
Racelogic do after market traction control, its worth asking if it is suitable for 4wd cars and wether it can use the signals from the abs sensors or not. Hope this helps. James
