If we are not really an entity, we are part of a bigger all. Thus helping others helps yourself.
A central tenet of Buddhism is that we all have the Buddha within. The struggle with suffering is cyclical, samsara, until you realize your own Buddhahood. This is necessarily an individual struggle, but most everyone is trying to help each other find enlightenment. The trouble is when we start to involve our own biases in our definition/application of enlightenment or to see one's own path to enlightenment as superior to others'. Helping people find enlightenment is exactly what the Buddha was doing when enlightened. Buddhism also embraces the idea that some people are boddhisatvas, which are people who achieve enlightenment but still struggle to help other people do the same. Boddhisatvas can be compassionate or austere.
