Reverse look up by address?

Let's say you type in the host name, "www.google.com" into your browser. The browser will contact the DNS (Domain Name Server) and ask it for the ip address (192.117.0.1 for example) for www.google.com. This is what's called a forward lookup. The reverse lookup then is when the browser has the ip address but needs to find the host name for that address. So the browser contacts the DNS using the ip address and asks for the host name.

What are instances in which a computer would use DNS besides ping?

Any time the computer uses a domain name! Ping is used in networking classes as an example. Here are some examples:You send an email to somebody@someserver.com. DNS needs to resolve the server name someserver.com. In your browser, you type wiki.answers.com. DNS needs to resolve the host name wiki.answers.com.You access FTP site ftp://ftp.someftpserver.com. DNS needs to resolve the host name ftp.someftpserver.com.Your MSN Messenger contacts the Microsoft servers - perhaps a host name such as msn.com. In all those cases, a hostname is provided by the user, or it is already programmed into some software. To actually communicate, the corresponding IP address must be found.

What is the working principle of DNS server?

To resolve host names to IP address eg wiki.answers.com to 192.41.64.63 or YourComputerName to 192.168.1.XXIf it wasnt for this to access a website you would need to type the IP address of the site or to access a share on a computer in stead of typing \\computername you would need to type the computer IPDNS also does the opposite IP to Hostname so you can do a lookup on an IP address and find out the hostnamefor example if you go in to command promt and do tracert yourcompIP it will say tracing route of YourCOmputer Name [YourCOmputerIP]
