AIDs refers to acquired-immunodeficiency-syndrome. It is what is called an opportunistic disease where the disease itself will not kill you, but the associated conditions that often accompany it are the ones that end up causing fatality. The way this happens is that the HIV virus attacks and can ultimately destroy the immune system. The once that happens, a person can succumb to any of a number of conditions which their body cannot fight off.
