According to the owner's manual, the recommended brake fluid is DOT4, and if it's not available, DOT3 can be used.

To bleed the cluth on a Yamaha Royal Star 1300 first drain all of the brake fluid from the vehicle. After draining the brake fluid pump the brake pedal up and down several times. All oil will then drain from the system.

You should flush and replace the brake fluid in your brake system every two years. You can change your own brake fluid, but service facilities now do this with brake flushing machines.
