While mitochondria themselves are not independent cells, but organelles, they DO have their own set of DNA. This and other evidence suggests that the current form of mitochondria came about from a symbiont relationship between a patriotic cell that very much resembled a mitochondria and a more complex ancestor of current eukaryotic cells.

No, the mitochondria is the "powerhouse" of the cell, certainly not an organ. It is only found inside the cell

What does mitochondria have to do with repiration?

Mitochondria are the organelles within a cell that house the enzymes that are involved in aerobic cellular respiration. Cell types that have a high demand for ATP (such as muscle cells) have many mitochondria while cell types with a low demand for ATP (such as osteocytes) have fewer mitochondria.
