Giraffes have a layer of thick gray skin covering their bodies. On top of the skin is fur in a distinct spotted pattern that is as individualized as fingerprints. The background is medium to reddish brown broken by splotches of light colored borders. The fur has a characteristic scent also serves a parasite repellent.
