There are two species of gorilla (each with two sub-species). They are primates (they have forward facing eyes and grasping hands). Until fairly recently, gorillas would have been classified as great apes, but it was realised that at least one "great ape" was more closely related to humans than to other great apes so this has led to a reclassification and the gorilla species (as well as the two chimpanzee species) are now classified as hominid.
