Carcharodon carcharias is a epipelagic shark, and is a seasonal migrating fish, so its behaviour also depends on the season of the year.
It may swim in the continental shelf, or in relative shallow waters near coastline (VERY near coastline in South African and Australian waters), but can also be found in deep open ocean.
During daylight, white sharks often swim near the surface or in shallow water near the coastline, looking for prey above.
However, great whites were already found at great dephts in open ocean, at 1,200 metres deep.
A recent marine biologist's study have found that great whites, when migrating in open ocean, do not swim always at the same depth.
They swim for a long time in 50 to 100 metres waters and then go to near 1,000 metres depths, to return the upper water layers later. And this cycle continues until the shark arrives the end of its migration.
Great White Sharks live near the surface. They even leap in their pursuit of seals.
Great White Sharks eat smaller sharks
Changes in the environment, such as temperature, lack of food or stronger currents can cause sharks to adapt.
yes great white sharks eat other sharks
Great Whites - like all Sharks - use gills to filter oxygen from the water. They can't breathe air.

Not all sharks have shelter but, Great White Sharks can't stop swiming or they die.
