If you are referring to a physician, there are two types of degrees earned in the United States. Either a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree can be earned. Both are equivalent degrees with a slightly different approach to treatment and patient care. Outside of the United States, the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBBS/MBChB) is sometimes offered.

A doctorate degree is the degree above a master's. The regular progression is bachelor's (B.A. or B.S. usually), master's (M.A., M.S., M.B.A., etc.) and then doctorate (M.D., J.D., Ph.D., etc.). To get your doctorate, you usually have to complete a dissertation, which is a published work on a unique topic.

People who have attained their doctorate may be addressed as Doctor/Dr., except for those who attain their juris doctorate (J.D.); they are still addressed as Mr./Ms.

The answer to your question depends on what you mean by doctor. If you mean medical physicians, a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (D.O.), a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), or a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS/MBChB) degree is needed. If you mean a research doctorate, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is required.
